ped xing signOur back-to-school September Safety Series is a three-part series focusing on safety around school zones and neighborhood areas where children are present. Here are a few things to keep in mind when traveling in areas where children are present and encountering buses, bikes and child pedestrians.

Part III: Sharing the road with child pedestrians

Generally speaking, pedestrians have the right-of-way at all intersections. Children are often distracted, unpredictable, difficult to see,and are more likely to take risks, ignore hazards and fail to look both ways when crossing the street. Take extra precautions in school zones and neighborhoods where children are.

  • Do not block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or a stop sign. By doing so, pedestrians are forced to walk around your vehicle which puts them in danger.
  • Exercise caution when in a school zone. Stop or yield the right-of-way to pedestrians crossing the road within a crosswalk or intersection.
  • Follow directions given by a crossing guard, school patrol officer, or special signs. Be sure to stop when directed to.
  • Even if you have the legal right-of-way, don’t honk your horn, rush, or scare a pedestrian in front of your car.
