Tips for negotiating wintery roads in Wisconsin
Last updated: 1/28/2010 11:05:52 AM
Negotiating wintery road conditions can be a challenge even if you are a Wisconsin native. Winter weather can make road conditions unpredictable, and sometimes treacherous. Before you hit the road, take time to prepare yourself and your vehicle for winter driving.
Prepare your vehicle
Start by getting your vehicle ready for winter weather and winter road conditions. Simple preventive measures can make a critical difference in your safety during the winter months. These things include checking tire pressure, inspecting all belts and hoses, making sure the battery is fully charged, changing the oil, switching to a thinner grade of engine oil for better performance in colder temperatures, and inspecting the wipers and wiper fluid to ensure better visibility.
Review and implement techniques for driving in winter weather
Before setting out, review the proven techniques for driving in snow and other winter road conditions. Remember to drive more slowly, brake before you enter a corner, and (should this happen to you) turn into a skid and accelerate slightly to regain control of your vehicle.
Plan ahead
Pay attention to weather reports and allow time in your schedule for bad weather and traffic delays.
Pack an emergency road kit
It’s a good idea to have supplies in your car to help you dig out or safely pass the time while you wait for assistance to arrive.
Emergency Road Kit
- small bag of sand or cat litter
- shovel
- cell phone (fully charged)
- flashlight and batteries
- emergency flares
- blanket or sleeping bag
- non perishable food items
- water
- first aid kit
- properly inflated spare tire
- jumper cables
